About the Program

The Department of Defense Cyber Service Academy (DoD CSA) is both a scholarship program for the DoD, and a capacity building tool for the nation. The program is a result of commitment from DoD and Congress to support higher education as a means to prepare the DoD workforce to deal with threats against the Department’s critical information system and networks.

DoD CSA is administrated by the Department of Defense and all awardees are chosen through their process.

BYU CSA Options

  • Undergraduate:

    • Current BYU student
    • Majoring in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or other STEM majors
    • Required 3.2 GPA out of 4.0

      • Rising Junior or Senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree
  • Graduate:

    • Current (or accepted) BYU MS students
    • Required 3.5 GPA out of 4.0
    • Master’s
    • PhD/Doctorate

Eligibility Requirements

  • U.S. citizen able to qualify for a security clearance.
  • Enrolled in a full-time cyber program at a designated National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (BYU qualifies for this)
  • Pursuing a course of study and/or have a declared major in one of the scientific, technical, or managerial disciplines related to cyber or have a concentration in cyber.
  • Have at least one full academic year remaining in degree program
  • Maintain flexibility to move within the continental U.S. to perform internships and final service obligations
  • Currently unencumbered to another program with a required service obligation

Benefits

  • Program available for 1-5 years
  • Full tuition and required fees (which may include institutional health care programs)
  • Stipend to cover room and board
    • $29,000 for undergraduate students
    • $34,000 for graduate (master’s/Ph.D.) students
  • Required books from the required institution- or degree-specific book list
  • One-time laptop/computer purchase
  • Sponsoring agency is assigned at the time the scholarship is awarded
  • Participation in community of students at BYU
  • Faculty mentoring

    Obligations

    • Students must participate in a summer internship(s) with their sponsoring government entity
    • Work for the sponsoring agency post-graduation for the number of years the scholarship was awarded.
